A good time for a good cause! The proceeds of the luncheon will benefit the First
Amendment Foundation and the Florida Press Foundation.
Paul Steiger is the editor-in-chief, president and chief executive of ProPublica,
an independent, non-profit newsroom producing investigative journalism in the public
interest. Mr. Steiger is also the chairman of the Committee to Protect Journalists,
a New York-based nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to promote press freedom
by working for the rights of journalists world-wide. He is a trustee of the John
S. and James L. Knight Foundation, based in Miami, which supports transformative
programs in areas including journalism and community development.
Mr. Steiger began his journalism career in 1966 as a reporter in the San Francisco
bureau of The Wall Street Journal. In 1968, he moved to the Los Angeles Times as
a staff writer and, in 1971, he transferred to that paper's Washington, D.C., bureau
as an economics correspondent. He returned to Los Angeles in 1978 to serve as the
Times' business editor. In 1983, Mr. Steiger rejoined the Journal as an assistant
managing editor in New York and became deputy managing editor in 1985. He was appointed
managing editor in 1991 and served in that role until May 2007. Under his leadership,
The Wall Street Journal's reporters and editors won 16 Pulitzer Prizes. He served
as editor-at-large of the Journal through year end 2007, when he assumed his present
position.
Mr. Steiger has received numerous awards for his work in journalism:

- National Press Club's Fourth Estate Award
- "Decade of Excellence" award from the World Leadership Forum in London
- Missouri Honor Medal for distinguished service in journalism
- American Society of Newspaper Editors' Leadership Award
- The John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA Gerald Loeb Award
- Columbia Journalism Award -Poynter Fellow by Yale University
- The National Press Foundation/George Beveridge Editor of the Year Award
- Pulitzer Prize Board from 1998 to 2007, serving as chairman in his final year
- John Hancock awards for economics and business coverage

Sunshine Week 2008
The First Amendment Foundation will announce our first-ever Sunshine Award for best political cartoon, op-ed/editorial, and article on open government for Sunshine Week. Sunshine Week is a national initiative to open a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. An award will be granted for each of the three categories. There is no submission fee, and any article that is posted to the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors website (www.fsne.org) is automatically entered in the contest. The winners will receive a $200 award and an all-expenses paid trip to the annual Florida Society of Newspaper Editors/Florida Press Association summer convention where he or she will be recognized.
One Day Training Seminars
The First Amendment Foundation is pleased to announce a series
of one day training seminars this fall to be held in conjunction with the Governor's
Office of Open Government. These training seminars are designed to provide education
on open government issues to all who are interested. Barbara Petersen, President
of the First Amendment Foundation, and Pat Gleason, Special Counsel to the Office
of Open Government, will each give a presentation in the morning, followed by a
presentation by the Bureau of Archives and Records Management in the afternoon.

Sunshine Recognition Luncheon
To raise the profile of open government and its friends, the First Amendment Foundation
is hosting its annual Sunshine Recognition Luncheon during this spring’s legislative
session. The luncheon will honor previous winners of the Pete Weitzel/Friend of
the First Amendment Award on Tuesday, March 25th from 11:45 am to 1:30 pm at the Governor’s Club in Tallahassee. This year, Governor Charlie Crist and St. Petersburg Times Editor and CEO Paul Tash will speak at the event! Additionally, attendance
to the Sunshine Recognition Luncheon secures an invitation to a reception at the
Governors Mansion for the evening of March 25th.
In the spirit of recognizing previous winners of the Weitzel award, we want celebrate
open government during this year's legislative session. Please join us!

Striking the balance between First Amendment rights of a free press and the Sixth Amendment rights to a fair trial has continued to be a hotly contested issue. Florida’s tradition of openness and transparency has extended to the judicial process, but not without much controversy and litigation. Today, Florida allows cameras into courts at the trial and appellate levels in criminal and civil cases. Experts will discuss the issue and its importance today. Join the discussion!
